The summer deal on the federal debt ceiling that created the supercommittee mandated a $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts, (including a provision the Republicons insited on that called for as much as $600 billion in national security cuts), if the special panel was unable to reach an agreement on at least $1.2 trillion in cuts.
Now that the republicon bluff has been called, they refuse to go along with the mandate that they themselves insisted upon being in the deal. I say cut the pentagon budget. We don't need two more aircraft carriers named after republicon chicken hawk presidents. We don't need a new fleet of 200 fighter jets that will fly for 1 only hour before needing 72 hours of maintenance (especially when the jets cost as much as $250 Million a plane). We don't need a privatized army - that costs 4 times as much (per soldier) than it would if we would just expand the US armed forces. It would be cheaper to have enlisted personnel as cooks than it does to hire Haliburton (a non American company) to run the mess halls. So I say - Go ahead cut $600 Billion from the DOD budget. Spend that money here keeping our schools from falling down - thereby keeping our kids safe - and keeping our bridges from falling down - fix them and our roads.
