Psst ... Bolling ... "Class Warfare" Is "Emanating" Out Of Fox News

August 23, 2011 9:21 pm ET

Fox News host Eric Bolling claimed that "class warfare" is "emanating out of the White House." In fact, it is Fox that has repeatedly engaged in "class warfare."

Fox's Bolling: "Class Warfare" Is "Emanating Out Of The White House"

Bolling: "Class Warfare" Is "Emanating Out Of The White House." During the August 22 edition of The Five, co-host Eric Bolling said to fellow panelist Dana Perino: "All right, Dana, what about the class warfare that seems to be, I don't know, emanating out of the White House? Is it only the White House, or is it the right, too?" [Fox News, The Five, 8/22/11]

In Fact, "Class Warfare" Is "Emanating" Out Of Fox News

Fox News Complained That A Proposal To Eliminate Tax Breaks On Corporate Jets Is Unfair. After President Obama cited tax breaks for corporate jets as an example of tax loopholes that could be closed to raise revenue, Fox News personalities criticized the proposal as unfair and accused Obama of engaging in "straightforward class warfare." [Media Matters, 6/30/11]

Fox News Decided Poverty Doesn't Exist If The Poor Own Common Household Appliances. Citing a Heritage Foundation report about the ownership of appliances among the poor in America, Fox News personalities dismissed significant hardships among the poor in securing health care, education, housing, and access to healthy food, claiming instead that a person cannot be poor if they own common household appliances. Bill O'Reilly opined: "So how can you be so poor and have all this stuff?" [Media Matters, 7/22/11]

Fox's Charles Payne Demanded That The Poor Be More Ashamed Of Their Poverty And Joblessness. Fox Business' Charles Payne complained that people "aren't embarrassed" that they need anti-poverty programs including food stamps and unemployment insurance. [Media Matters, 5/19/11]

Fox Business Pitted The "Takers" Of "Government Handouts" Against The "Makers." After a National Bureau of Economic Research study concluded that social safety net programs, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, were highly effective at keeping people out of poverty, Fox Business launched a week-long series pitting the "takers" of "government handouts" against the "makers" in the economy. [Media Matters, 5/24/11]

Fox Business Hosts Warned That Increased Use Of Food Stamps During A Recession Could Lead To "Economic Dependence." Fox Business' John Stossel and Chris Cotter warned that an increase in food stamps usage during the recession could lead to "economic dependence." [Media Matters, 8/17/11]

Fox's Byrnes: "What's Unfair" About The Tax Code Is The Earned Income Tax Credit. Fox Business' Cheryl Casone suggested that subjecting the poor to heavier taxation was "a way to solve America's debt crisis," while Fox' Tracy Byrnes said that "what's unfair" about the tax code is the Earned Income Tax Credit for low- and middle-income Americans. [Media Matters, 6/26/10]

Fox's Varney: The Earned Income Tax Credit Is A "Welfare Scheme." Fox Business host Stuart Varney said:

VARNEY: Whenever you've got a cash welfare system you are going to have people gaming that system. What you have not got on the screen is the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is by far the biggest cash -- I'm going to call it a welfare scheme. That is known as the most corrupt government program. {Political_Views} Losing on the Facts, AT&T Turns to Smears

Losing on the Facts, AT&T Turns to Smears

Posted: 8/23/11 05:56 PM ET

A cornered animal is a dangerous thing. It will scratch. It will bite. It will lash out desperately in any direction to escape its predicament. And so it is that AT&T swings wildly as its $39 billion bid for T-Mobile unravels.

AT&T's deception about the need to take over T-Mobile is now in the public realm for good, exposed by its own accidental publication of an unredacted internal document on the Federal Communications Commission website. That document showed that AT&T could bring the fastest wireless service to the whole country on its own -- and for a tenth of the price it would pay to take over T-Mobile.

This isn't the first gaping hole to appear in AT&T's case. The company is already on its third "new model" explaining the benefits of the deal, because the FCC found the first two so lacking. And despite AT&T's transparent attempts to spin the Beltway press, key members of Congress and more and more consumers are pushing the FCC and the Department of Justice to reject the merger bid because of its obvious harms to competition, jobs and our wallets.

AT&T's response is not to come up with better arguments and better data that prove the merit of its claims. AT&T is instead smearing Free Press because we had the audacity to point out that AT&T's own data actually contradict its claims.

We are labeled "extremists" in their eyes because we didn't take their word for it. But let's be absolutely clear about something: There is nothing "extreme" about fact checking.

Let's take a look at the facts and see what AT&T wants to cover up with its smears.

AT&T has ginned up support -- among governors, members of Congress, cowboys and hot air balloon enthusiasts -- for its takeover of T-Mobile. The premise of this support? That 55 million Americans will never see next-generation mobile broadband service unless the government approves this deal.

We've been saying all along this is patently false, because every one of those rural Americans will be served with Verizon's 4G service by 2013; that AT&T already plans to serve them with its slightly slower 4G service by 2012; and that without the merger, AT&T would have to make a relatively minimal investment to upgrade those areas to the latest 4G technology, lest it cede too much competitive ground to Verizon.

Well, now all those supporters have something that should make them reconsider their justification for this anti-competitive and job-killing deal. Press reports have exposed how AT&T's own filings with the FCC show that covering these 55 million Americans would cost at most $3.8 billion, or a 90-percent discount off the price tag of this merger.

In response to this damning news, AT&T rolled out a few of its own Baghdad Bobs to tell reporters, "Move along, nothing to see here." That didn't work, so now AT&T has turned to lying about what its original letter said and responding to Free Press and other critics with a schoolyard-style "nuh-uh" response.

However, this plan won't work if the fourth estate continues to examine the cracks in the wall that AT&T itself created.

Some reporters will be content to play AT&T's smear campaign as a he said/she said between the company and Free Press, despite the fact that it's not our word against theirs -- it's their word against theirs. Others, hopefully, will look behind AT&T's bluster and see that AT&T isn't arguing the merits because the facts hurt its case.

So for muckrakers, stringers, reporters and bloggers (or federal regulators or Congress members) who want to put AT&T's ministers of truth on the record about the facts rather than name-calling, here are five lines of questioning you might pursue:

1. AT&T, why is a $39 billion takeover necessary, when a $3.8 billion investment in your network would allow you to expand broadband service on your own? If the unredacted document is "consistent with [your] public statements," why was it kept confidential and taken out of the record after it was made public?

2. AT&T, you've promised to build your 4G LTE service to 97 percent of Americans by 2018 if the merger is approved. But if the merger is nixed, what will your LTE network look like in 2018? Can you afford to have Verizon zoom ahead of you with its promise of full nationwide advanced LTE coverage by 2013, attacking you with more embarrassing "there's a map for that" advertisements?

3. AT&T, the $3.8 billion you are now saying was too costly amounts to about half a billion dollars a year in extra investment needed between now and 2018, the year you are promising to finish building LTE to 97 percent of the country. Last year, you spent about $10 billion on wireless capital investments, and you brought in nearly $60 billion in revenues and $16 billion in wireless profits. Is increasing your investment by 5 percent really too much to justify, even given the "marketing and competitive benefits of doing so"?

4. AT&T, you proposed this merger to T-Mobile's parent company on January 15. Press reports say this bid occurred right around the time when management rejected your own team's plan to build out LTE to 97 percent of the country. Did you "reject" this proposal because it was too expensive, or did the knowledge that you were about to attempt a previously unthinkable merger, one where you would need a good carrot to hold out for political support, factor into your decision not to build out on your own?

5. What are your actual plans for jobs should this merger go through? You've said there are no current plans to cut the workforce, but your pitch to investors says you'll save $10 billion in "synergies." Why won't you reveal your specific plans for T-Mobile workers?

Most giants think they can get away with just about anything, because they usually do. When they fail, it's often because a reporter or two keeps pushing and makes hay out of unforced errors like AT&T's inadvertent disclosure.

This kind of accountability journalism is why we at Free Press fight for a more diverse and better media, and we hope those out there on the beat will use their access and sources to do their profession, and the public, a favor by digging further.

News from The Hill:

Pentagon: China's quest for military might is showing results
By John T. Bennett

China's military is "steadily closing the technological gap with modern armed forces" and remains calibrated for a conflict with Taiwan, according to an annual Pentagon report released Wednesday.

The report notes Chinese leaders are driving hard toward achieving a set of "economic and military benchmarks" by the end of this decade, and concludes Beijing's ultimate goal is to become "a world-class economic and military power by 2050."

The 2011 report to Congress on the Asian giant's military might and objectives was delivered to Capitol Hill and publicly released Wednesday, more than 170 days after it was due.

In the report, the Pentagon says China is increasingly confident of its position on the world stage.

{Political_Views} FCC to AT&T: Is That Your Final Answer?

News of the movement for August 25, 2011
FCC to AT&T: Is That Your Final Answer?

The army of lawyers and lobbyists AT&T and T-Mobile have assembled to ram this merger through are going to need more than a conference call or two to make this deal happen. They're going to have to convince two federal agencies, leaders in Congress, at least nine state regulatory agencies, investors and consumers that killing off competitors is somehow good for competition, cutting jobs is somehow good for employment and refusing to invest in infrastructure is somehow good for investment.

Joel Kelsey, SavetheInternet.com
FCC Wants More T-Mobile LTE Data from AT&T

The FCC has requested more data on AT&T's planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile. The agency is specifically seeking more data on why AT&T wants to acquire the company. AT&T's primary justification for the deal is they'd be unable to match Verizon's 97 percent LTE coverage without it. However, that argument was accidentally demolished by leaked documents showing AT&T has plenty of resources to accomplish this goal on its own. The company simply doesn't want to pay $3.8 billion to do so.

FCC Asks AT&T for More Information on Merger

The FCC asked AT&T for more information backing the company's claims it needs to merge with T-Mobile in order to bring mobile broadband services to rural areas. The FCC's request comes after the discovery of private AT&T documents filed to the agency that showed the company figured it would cost $3.8 billion to bring 4G LTE wireless services to 97 percent of the country.

{Political_Views} War Budget Cuts Possible If We Counter Contractors' Multimillion-Dollar Campaign Spending

Click here to watch the video

Sign the petition.

Dear Friend,

Our nation's obsession with militarism is tearing us apart. Our loved ones return in coffins or with trauma from wars and other military operations. Wasted resources on war and weapons means fewer jobs. War industry executives get rich from lucrative contracts at our expense. Our bloated war budget and military empire are wrecking our country and hurting others around the world.

The congressional commission created by the debt ceiling deal (as painful as it was) provides a major opportunity, so we're working overtime to launch a new campaign, War Costs, to push for real cuts to war spending. The debt deal makes possible around $1 trillion in war spending cuts over 10 years. These cuts can help save our economy, but military contractors plan to dump lobbying and campaign money on committee members to protect their profits. In fact, committee members have already taken around $1 million from the companies since 2007. To counter them, we must:

  1. Demand that committee members fully disclose any meetings held with military contractors and that they stop taking financial contributions from these companies as long as they serve on the committee. Please sign our petition to congressional leaders on this topic.
  2. Expose military contractors' spokespeople and false information as the committee is pressured on possible cuts.

Then, we'll expand our campaign. We'll document the massive war spending, mayhem caused by pursuit of empire, and the racket run by big military contractors to keep the spending going. We'll also focus on how to stop it.

You stood with us on other critical issues--fake journalism at FOX News, the ugly truth about WalMart, rethinking the Afghanistan War. We need you with us again to show Washington, D.C. that lobbyists aren't the only ones who can apply pressure.

Please be a leader for change by visiting WarCosts.com to sign our petition. You can also sign up to participate in our future actions in the fight against the war industry and their allies who are profiting at the people's expense.  This is time sensitive, so please join today.

Sincerely,

Derrick Crowe, Robert Greenwald
and the Brave New Foundation team

{Political_Views} Arrogance of being President while being Black....

This is an excellent article written by a someone who is realistic (and happens to be White).
The very last paragraph says it all.

AUTHOR UNKNOWN but it is all over the web.
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW!!!!!

cid:X.MA1.1302885978@aol.com
Arrogance of being President while being Black

I don't think anyone was under some real illusion that the election of Barack Obama actually means the end of racism in America . I'm pretty sure that the president-elect knew it better than anyone. After all, he saw it every day, from the moment he announced his candidacy. To some degree, he saw it within his own party during the primaries. And he saw it in all ugliness during the general election. For half of this country, he was "That One". No matter how big and clear his victory was. No matter how smart he is. No matter how decent he is. No matter what a true patriot he is. No matter how refined he is.  No matter how optimistic and positive his vision for America was. All that didn't matter. Because at the end of the day, he was still black.

I'm quite old. I remember, vaguely, where my parents were on November 22, 1963. I've seen so many presidents. Some were feared, some were hated, some were adored, some popular and some not. But all of them, without exception, were treated with the highest respect deserving the office of the president of the United States .

That is until a black man won the right to occupy this office. It's been some time now, and in the eyes of so many, Barack Obama is still "that one". He is being disrespected and at the same time being held to the highest standard of any president I've ever seen – and not just by the Republican side! He has to perform three times better than any president in history, and even that may not be enough

For the media, he is many more times just "Obama" than "President Obama". They create scandals out of nothing issues. It took them at least 6 years to start giving Bush a small part of the shit he deserved. It took them 6 months to begin crap all over Obama because he's yet to fix the catastrophe that was left for him.

They use condescending tones when they talk about him, and only mildly less condescending when they talk TO him. With anyone else, CNN wouldn't dare go to commercials every time the president speaks, like they did during that summit on Thursday. They wouldn't dare be counting how many minutes George Bush or Bill Clinton were talking. Chris Mathews wouldn't dare make an issue out of Ronald Regan calling members of congress by their first name, like he is not actually the president. They fully cooperate with the Right-Wing smear machine when it comes to president Obama's national security performance – even if almost every independent and military expert actually thinks that he's a terrific Commander-in-Chief. You'll never see them on TV, and virtually no one from the Left, in congress and outside, defend the president on this matter.

I don't care about the Far-Right. They're just crazy ignorant Neanderthals. It's the way the beltway and the mainstream treats this president that is shocking. On Thursday, almost every Republican had no trouble interrupting him in the middle of a sentence. They looked like they're going to vomit every time they had to say "Mr. president". They all had this Eric-Cantor-Smirk whenever he spoke. Then they went out and started to spit their stupid talking points, to the delight of the media. Sarah Palin, a woman who can hardly read, thinks that he was "arrogant" towards John McCain, and somehow this is an important news. Because you see, "Obama's Arrogance" is the talking point of the day.

Oh, those talking points!  He is arrogant (because he knows the facts better than all of them combined). He is an elitist (because he uses big words that they don't understand). He is weak on national security (because he actually thinks about the consequences). He divides the country (well, he did that the day he had the audacity to win the election). Worst of all, he actually thinks that he's the president. He even dared to say so on Thursday. How arrogant of him. You'd think that previous presidents didn't have any ego. Somehow it turned out that the one president who treats even his biggest opponents with the utmost respect – is the arrogant one. I wonder why?

I expected that his winning the Presidency would bring out some ugliness, but it's been far worse than I imagined. The racism coming from the Right is obviously clear and shameless, but there's also some hidden and maybe subconscious and disturbing underline tone behind some of the things that I read here and throughout the Left blogosphere, even before the end of Obama's first year - 'He's weak, he's spineless, he's got no balls, primary him in 2012'. It'll be dishonest to deny that.

The fact is that for millions in America, Barack Obama is this uppity black man (Not even a "real" black), who received good education only due to affirmative action, and has no right to litter the sacred Oval Office with his skin color. They just can't accept the fact that the president is a black man, who unlike his predecessors, was actually legally elected. But what's really sad is that it's not just the fringe, its deep deep in mainstream America .

Barack Obama's ability to remain above all this slob, to keep his optimism and his strange and mostly unjustified faith in people, while continuing to gracefully deal with an endless shitstorm – is one of the most inspiring displays of human quality I have ever seen. And I can only hope that the Cosmos is on his side because God is and HE never makes a mistake.

Sometimes, they make me feel ashamed to be a white man!!

{Political_Views} Restoring Hyperbole: Beck's Jerusalem Rally Will Be "A Planet Course-Altering Event"

Restoring Hyperbole: Beck's Jerusalem Rally Will Be "A Planet Course-Altering Event"

August 22, 2011 1:32 pm ET — 57 Comments

Much as he did with his "Restoring Honor" rally last year, Beck is hyping this week's "Restoring Courage" rally in Jerusalem with outrageous hyperbole and overblown religious rhetoric. According to Beck, the rally "could be miraculous," and will be a "life-changing, life-altering event" where "there's a possibility a pillar of fire appears."

"This Could Be Miraculous": Beck Explains That His Jerusalem Rally Will Change Your Life...And Probably The World

Beck: "A Religious Figure That I Respect" Told Me That Restoring Courage "May Be A Fulfillment Of Zechariah Prophecy." From The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: Somebody sent this to me last night -- a religious figure that I respect. He said it was sent in by somebody else and he said, "I've looked into this, and I think this might be right." He said, "The Restoring Courage event," he said, "I believe may be, may be, a fulfillment of Zechariah prophecy." Listen to this from Zechariah. He's talking about, and in the days when all hell breaks loose, this is what the Lord Almighty says. Quote, "Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come. And the inhabitants of one city will go to another. Let us go at once to entreat the Lord and seek the Lord Almighty. I myself am going, and many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord Almighty and entreat him."

Now I don't know what he was talking about, but gosh, that sounds familiar. That sounds awfully darn familiar. And let me tell you, many mighty nations are coming. Many. I don't know if this is just going to be something that we're all gonna talk about once we hang out and we're getting Slurpees at the 7-Eleven, you know, when we're all much much older. Or if this is Zechariah. I have no idea. [Premiere Radio Networks, Glenn Beck Program, 8/12/11]

Beck: Restoring Courage Will Be "A Planet Course-Altering Event" Where "There's A Possibility A Pillar Of Fire Appears." From The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: There's a lot, a lot happening. And if you went to Restoring Honor last year in Washington -- there were over 500,000 people there. And if you felt it - if you felt it and you long to feel it again. Join us. You don't have to be in Israel. Join us. Grab a group around you. Watch it yourself if you have to. But you will feel it -- I'll tell ya, one of two things are going to happen. Either the press is going to ignore it, which they did really on 8-28. They ignored the message. They covered it and then were like, "and we don't even really understand what that was." But half a million people felt it that were there. And they'll ignore it, and it will seem as though nothing really happened. That's my guess. But I'm telling you. It's going to change lives. I don't know how. I don't know what's going to happen, quite honestly. But it's going to change lives. It is a life changing, and I think planet course-altering event. And I would invite you to join us, either physically or virtually. Find out all the details at GlennBeck.com/Israel or GBTV.com. Sign up right now. It is 8-21 - 8-21 is the first broadcast. There are three separate broadcasts that are explained at GlennBeck.com. Check that out. The other thing that's going to happen - it's either going to be something that everybody ignores, or, I swear to you, and I mean this sincerely, there's a possibility a pillar of fire appears. I mean, I think this could be miraculous.

Or, you know, somewhere in between that option there. [Premiere Radio Networks, Glenn Beck Program, 8/1/11]

Beck: "This Is A Life-Changing, Life-Altering Event." From The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: What we announced today on the Restoring Courage rally in Jerusalem will be the same kind of feel that you experienced in Washington, except I will tell you, I believe much more profound. This is a life-changing, life-altering event. This is you making the decision. [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 5/16/11]

Beck: Restoring Courage Will Be "A Pinnacle Moment In Your Life. It Will Define You." From The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: You know, it's not just something that is -- that you -- because not everybody can afford to be there. It's wildly expensive. What we would like -

GRAY: What do you think it costs for the average person to fly to Israel? It's gonna be, what,  $800 in airfare -

BECK: For the hotel stays and everything, and this is through people that we are trying to offer. And I think it's about $4,500. Now that -

GRAY: Is that doing it cheaply, or is that doing it -

BECK: No no, that's - I think that's -- I'm not sure, I better not stay - I better not say. I think that was like the decent package, but not like the full boat. But that does include - there are going to be other things during the week that we will be announcing as we get closer. If you thought what we did at the Kennedy Center was amazing, wait until you see what we have planned for the lead-up of this. This will be unlike - this will be, a, I think, a pinnacle moment in your life. It will define you. In the end, this event will define you.

GRAY: And we've said many times, 8-27 was maybe even more powerful than 8-28. For those who were able to be to that event it was just a - and we'll have events just like that leading up to this. [Premiere Radio Network, Glenn Beck Program, 5/16/11]

Beck: "I Wouldn't Be Surprised If A Pillar Of Fire Showed Up. Sky Is The Limit." From the Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: I also want to tell you something else that is up on the website today, GlennBeck.com - where is it here - Dr. Mike Evans writes in support of Restoring Courage. I have seen many, many miracles since we started this Restoring Courage event, and I mean this sincerely. When we do these three events starting a week from Sunday, you know, the press will probably ignore it. It won't be a big deal. It will be made fun of who does cover it. But those who see it will be so deeply moved, I believe, by what's going on, that it will alter your life. It may not alter the world, but I believe it will alter your life. With that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this did alter the world. I wouldn't be surprised if a pillar of fire showed up. Sky is the limit. I have seen miracles on this. [Premiere Radio Networks, Glenn Beck Program,  8/10/11]

Beck: If You Participate, "It Is Not Only Going To Change Your Life Forever, It Will Change Your Family's Life. And It Will Change The Direction Of The World." From the Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: This is why I've said that we have to do Restoring Courage. You've gotta find what you believe, and we've got to make sure that we are in lockstep together and courageous in our own ways. Find out all about it in Israel, and how you can get involved here in America. I think we have like 400 churches that are reaching out in their community and they are going to be gathering and standing. It's an amazing number so far, and we're still two months away. I invite you to get involved one way or the other. Come. Come. Find out how you can be there with us. I am promising you this. What I told you last time, last August, if you come to Restoring Honor, it will be a life-changing event. I am telling you this, that if you go to Israel this year, or you, even if you can't afford it, if you virtually attend. And you really do it. You really connect with your community. It is not only going to change your life forever, it will change your family's life. And it will change the direction of the world. It really will. It will change you, and your family, and your world. If you will participate this year. And it's vitally important. [Premiere Radio Networks, Glenn Beck Program, 6/29/11]

Beck Suggested Rally Will Open The "Very Gates Of Heaven." From Glenn Beck:

BECK: Let me tell you something. First of all, take six, please. Remember this up here? I said, radicals, Islamist, communist, socialist, will work together against Israel. Capitalism overturned. I said this in January. I'd left it up so nobody forgets, because everyone made fun of me.

When I saw Tunisia, I told you that is the Archduke Ferdinand moment. It will set the Middle East on fire and set the world on fire. And nobody will remember.

This is the moment the president is referencing. He is holding up a guy that set himself on fire as the next Thomas Jefferson or Rosa Parks. He's not backing off the "Arab Spring." He is cheerleading it.

Well, finally, throwing in a token line about the Coptic Christian churches that are burning in Egypt, by saying the Coptic Christians have to have the right to worship freely in Cairo. Oh, well I hope some of them set themselves on fire to make the point.

The way this fundamental transformation of the world is being played is awe-inspiring. Have no doubt about it, it is absolutely brilliant. They have united with every enemy of capitalism, of Israel, of America, of the Western way of life. But it is evil and you should call it by its name.

This August, in Jerusalem -- I cannot believe I'm saying this -- it truly may be the last time you can stand and worship and see the holy sites of Jerusalem. The United Nations comes together in September to either endorse or condemn Israel. This may be it for our generation or for all mankind. I don't know.

Tomorrow on the radio and, in case you don't listen, go to glennbeck.com, but you need to know immediately I'm going to announce I didn't make the decision of where -- we've reserved so many sites. Last night at 1:00 a.m. Eastern time, I made the decision -- because we had to be on the phone and give a decision to all of these places in Israel -- 1:00 a.m., man, I prayed on this one hard because what I'm going to announce tomorrow.

I thought it was -- I thought it was going to be rough going yesterday. Now with what the president has done -- let me tell you something -- this is going to be a life-altering event. It will take profound courage to stand in Israel because I believe the very gates of hell have just been opened against them, but the very gates of heaven are about to open up the other way. Join me at glennbeck.com. Information tomorrow. [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 5/19/11, via Nexis]

Beck: "This Must Be The Third American Awakening." From The Glenn Beck Program:

BECK: The masks are about to come off. They are all coming off. This is the moment. This summer, you are seeing first the Arab Spring. Now the European Summer. And it could turn into the American Fall. You are seeing the masks come off. You are seeing so clearly where people stand. Clearly where people stand. It's up to you to actually see it and know it yourself. Forget about your neighbors or your family that will not get into the boat. If they don't see it at this point, keep moving on. They'll have to catch up. You've got to unite with people who understand it and see it. And I'm going to be issuing a call in the next few weeks to really, truly stand together. And not just in a movement. If 8-24 is just a day, the West loses. This must be a cultural moment. This must be the Third American Awakening. I will tell you now that I truly believe that God is not neutral in these things. I truly believe in Divine Providence and the protection of Divine Providence. [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 6/20/11]

"God Bless Glenn Beck": Restoring Courage Participants Sing Beck's Praises

Pastor John Hagee: "God Bless Glenn Beck For His Godly Courage In Making This Night Happen." From GBTV's webcast of Restoring Courage: Love:

HAGEE: Greetings to each and every person who has given your time and treasure to join us in Caesarea with Glenn Beck and Restoring Courage celebration. I want to say personally, God Bless Glenn Beck for his Godly courage in making this night happen. This night is about courage, and the history of Israel is the portrait of courage. [GBTV, Restoring Courage: Love, 8/21/11]

Rabbi Aryeh Leifert: Beck Is A "Truly Wise And Courageous Man." From GBTV's webcast of Restoring Courage: Love:

LEIFERT: This evening at the first event of the Restoring Courage program, we beseech you for your blessings and protection for a truly wise and courageous man, Glenn Beck, as he continues to stand up in support of your people, in your land. Nearly 2,000 years ago, the great Rabbi Akiva stood courageously just a few hundred meters from this spot and paid with his life for continuing to preach that which he knew was right and true.

Today, there are few people in the world who have the courage to stand up for what they know to be right and true. We thank you, oh Lord, for blessing the state of Israel and the Jewish people with a friend like Glenn Beck. One whose wisdom is deep, whose moral compass is pointed straight, and who has proven his commitment to the land upon which your eye is always set and to the people whom you have chosen to be a cherished nation. Eternal God, please also bless Glenn's wife Tania and their children and give them the strength to support their husband and father in his difficult holy work. At this time of crisis in Israel, oh Lord, we ask that you bless, protect and defend all the brave soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces and grant wisdom, foresight, and good counsel to our elected leaders. We also pray for a complete recovery of those injured in last Thursday's terror attacks near Eilat. Finally, oh God, we pray that you bless all of us who are seekers of the peace of Jerusalem. [GBTV, Restoring Courage: Love, 8/21/11]

Rabbi Shlomo Riskin: Beck Is "A Deeply Patriotic American, A True Friend Of Israel, A Fierce Defender Of Human Freedom And Human Rights." From GBTV's webcast of Restoring Courage: Love:

RISKIN: I'm so honored to be with you in Caeserea this evening for what is a magnificent, transformative Restoring Courage event, conceived by the one and only Glenn Beck. A deeply patriotic American, a true friend of Israel, a fierce defender of human freedom and human rights. And endorsed by my revered and beloved friend, pastor John Hagee, one of the greatest religious leaders of the world. A man who has literally put his life on the line because of his love and support for Israel. And I'm overwhelmed by the presence this evening of so many of our Christian brothers and sisters, united with us by their great love for Israel. Christian friends of Israel, bridges for peace, Christian friends of Israeli communities led by Sondra Baras, and hosts of others who have come despite the fact that we have a war. Many of them from America, specifically for this meeting and these meetings this week. God Bless you all.

And I especially applaud the presence of the many Christian Arabs who are here, their religious leader, my beloved friend pastor Steven Khoury. [GBTV, Restoring Courage: Love, 8/21/11]

"Servant of God": Beck's Restoring Honor Participants Heaped Praise On Him

Last August, Beck held a rally in Washington, D.C., on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Participants and honorees showered Beck with praise.

Reverend C.L. Jackson: "God Sent His Son To This Earth So That We Could All Gather. And I Think That's The Dream And The Vision Of Glenn Beck." From C-SPAN's coverage of Restoring Honor:

JACKSON:  God brought us here to this bright young, I call him, servant of God, son of God, Glenn Beck. And not only him, but Dave Barton and all of you. Some forty-eight years ago, right over here beyond the fence, I stood as a young man who was led here by God and Martin Luther King. Stood right over there.

My first trip here to Washington - the first trip on a bus to go through Mississippi, which they dared us to come because they promised us they would blow the bus up. And we came and served and [unintelligible] Dr. Martin Luther King preach, "I have a dream." Thank you.

But let me say this, can I get out of your hair? God sent his son to this earth so that we could all gather, and I think that's the dream and the vision of Glenn Beck. [C-SPAN, Restoring Honor, 8/28/10]

Jon Huntsman Sr.: Beck Is "One Of America's Most Trusted And Honored Citizens." From C-SPAN's coverage of Restoring Honor:

EMMA HOUSTON: As you can tell, I am not Mr. Jon M. Huntsman. I am honored to be here today representing Mr. Jon M Huntsman and receiving Glenn Beck's award for charity. I know of no more charitable individual than Mr. Huntsman. He deeply regrets that a family marriage occurring at precisely this time precludes him from being here personally. He has a granddaughter getting married.

He expressed his humility upon receiving this great honor, and may I quote him exactly: "Glenn Beck is one of America's most trusted and honored citizens. I am grateful to him for presenting to me, through Emma Houston, this award for charity. Many other people are far more deserving." [C-SPAN, Restoring Honor, 8/28/10]

Beck Co-Host Pat Gray: You Know Beck As "America's History Professor." From GlennBeck.com's Insider Extreme broadcast of "Divine Destiny":

GRAY: I'm not here to dance. Settle down. I'm Pat Gray of The Glenn Beck Program. I've known Glenn for over twenty years. Oh, the stories I could tell if the press only got a hold of me. You know him as the host of a cable news show at 5 eastern on Fox. You know him as the host of the third most listened-to radio program in all of America. You know him as, as someone described to me in line at the National Archive today, "America's History Professor." Someone who tells the truth about what's going on in America today.

I know him as someone who cares so deeply about America that he loses sleep nightly. I know him as someone who loves his wife and children so dearly that he puts his neck out there for the media to take hacks at all day every day. Yes, I knew him during the so-called dirtbag years. But I also know him as a man who has had a total transformation of heart. He is a man who now loves people with all his heart, and loves the lord with all his heart, mind, and spirit. I know him as a man, and so do you, as a man who works tirelessly fighting for this country and put this together. This is his brainchild tonight and tomorrow. Let me introduce him to you now, Glenn Beck.  [GlennBeck.com, 8/27/10]

Alveda King Thanked Beck For Using "His Popularity And Influence To Bring Us Together." From C-SPAN's coverage of Restoring Honor:

KING: It's absolutely wonderful for Glenn to use his popularity and influence to bring us together to focus not on an election or a political cause, but to focus on honor and on the content of our character, and not the color of our skin. God bless you, Glenn. [C-SPAN, Restoring Honor, 8/28/10]

"American Miracle": Beck Hyped Last Year's Restoring Honor Event With Similar Hyperbole

Preceding last year's "Restoring Honor" event in Washington, D.C., Beck promoted the event with similarly over-the-top rhetoric:

  • Beck: 8-28 "A Defibrillator To The Heart Of America." [Fox News, Glenn Beck,  8/16/10]
  • Beck Said 8-28 Would Be "The Woodstock Of The Next Generation." [Premiere Radio Network, The Glenn Beck Program, 8/19/10]
  • Beck Suggested 8-28 Might Be "Remembered As The Moment America Turned The Corner." [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 6/8/10]
  • Beck Thought His Rally Would "Grow The Next George Washington And Abraham Lincoln." [Premiere Radio Network, The Glenn Beck Program, 5/27/10]
  • Beck Promised 8-28 Rally Would Be "One For The History Books," And A "Turning Point In America." [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 6/10/11]
  • Beck Claimed 8-28 Would "Reclaim The Civil Rights Movement." [Premiere Radio Network, The Glenn Beck Program, 5/26/10]
  • Beck Thought It Was "Divine Providence" That His 8-28 Speech Coincided With The Anniversary Of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" Speech. [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 6/18/10]
  • Promotional Video Placed 8-28 In Context Of Moon Landing, Iwo Jima, Signing Of The Declaration Of Independence. [GlennBeck.com, accessed 8/26/10]
  • Beck Asked Listeners To "Be A Part Of An American Miracle" On 8-28. [Premiere Radio Networks, The Glenn Beck Program, 8/23/10
  • After 8-28, Beck Pointed To Geese Flying Over The Event As A "Miracle": "I Think It Was God's Flyover." [Fox News, Glenn Beck, 8/30/10]

{Political_Views} Conservative "Lame Stream" Media Edit Out Government's Role In Texas Economy

Conservative Media Edit Out Government's Role In Texas Economy

August 22, 2011 7:52 pm ET — 37 Comments

Conservative pundits have attributed economic growth and job creation in Texas to the success of conservative policies like low taxes and small government. But government has played a significant role in Texas' recent economic record: Federal spending helped balance the state budget, and strict regulation helped shield it from the housing bubble.

Conservatives Tout Texas' "Embrace" Of "Fiscal Conservatism"

Wash. Times' Kuhner: "Embrace" Of "Fiscal Conservatism" Led To "Stellar Economic Record." From The Washington Times:

[Perry] also has a stellar economic record. From June 2001 until June 2010, Texas added more jobs than the other 49 states combined. Since June 2009, it has generated nearly 40 percent of all net jobs in America. His formula is simple: Embrace fiscal conservatism. His administration has controlled spending, balanced budgets and slashed burdensome regulations. Texas is a right-to-work state. It does not have a personal income or capital gains tax. It is a magnet for businesses, job creators and investment capital. [The Washington Times, 8/18/11]

Fox & Friends' Carlson Repeats "Lowering Taxes And Regulations" Has Led To Texas' Job Growth. From Fox & Friends:

GRETCHEN CALRSON (co-host): So what has happened in Texas? The governor says it's simple. It's all about lowering taxes and regulations. And look at what's happened as a result. Texas has added 37 percent of all U.S. jobs since the recovery began. That's astounding. And Governor Perry makes no bones about it. He's like, "Look, yeah, I've gone to other states like California and tried to recruit people to come and work in Texas," because he believes it's a better environment to work in Texas. Keep in mind, no state income tax there as well.

BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): Yeah, no state income tax. In fact, they have tort reform. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 6/15/11]

WSJ Editorial: "The Government In Austin Is Small, Taxes Are Low, Regulation Is Stable," Which Is "A Magnet For Private Investment And Hiring." From a Wall Street Journal editorial:

Some of this Texas growth is due to high birth rates, some to immigration. But it also reflects the flight of people from other states. People and capital are mobile and move where the opportunities are greatest. Texas is attractive to workers and employers alike because of its low costs of living and doing business. The government in Austin is small, taxes are low, regulation is stable, and the litigation system is more predictable after Mr. Perry's tort reforms -- all of which is a magnet for private investment and hiring. [The Wall Street Journal, 8/19/11]

Weekly Standard's Hemingway Cites "Tax" And "Regulatory Climate" As Reasons For Texas Job Growth. From a Weekly Standard blog post by Mark Hemingway:

[Paul] Krugman's paragraph here explains a lot about why "Keynesian" should probably be a bigger slur than "former Enron adviser." For one thing, job creation is not a zero-sum game. Texas hasn't created over 40 percent of the country's new jobs just by taking them away from other states. A lot of those jobs wouldn't exist, period, if Texas didn't create a tax a regulatory climate to encourage them -- Texas added 732,000 jobs in the last decade, and no other state created more than 100,000. If Krugman's unimpressed, that's because he's the one that's trading in fallacies here.

[...]

This isn't exactly a surprise, but Krugman's being spectacularly dishonest here. He also fails to mention that Texas has twice closed massive budget deficits under Perry's tenure as governor -- without raising taxes. The fact that Texas has its fiscal house in order, unlike just about every other blue state, surely has something to do with Texas' economic growth. The reality is that just about every other blue state is a governing basket case when compared to Texas, and the comparison is revealing and instructive. [The Weekly Standard, 8/15/11]

Hot Air's Ed Morrissey: "Jobs Got Created" In Texas "Because The State Government Got Out Of The Way Of Job Creation And Business Expansion." From Hot Air's Ed Morrissey:

Jobs didn't grow because people came to Texas.  People came to Texas because jobs got created there.  And jobs got created there, especially over the last two years, because the state government got out of the way of job creation and business expansion.  In fact, the results have been so dramatic that other states have sent delegations to Texas to see how they can duplicate the success. [Hot Air, 7/26/11]

But Federal Spending, Public-Sector Jobs Have Buoyed Texas' Economy

BLS: Texas Has Added Around 100,000 Government Jobs Since Beginning Of Recession. From the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

[StLouisFed.org, accessed 8/22/11]

Wash. Post: Much Of Texas' Economic Strength "Has Come Because Of Government, Not In Spite Of It." From The Washington Post:

Perry says the "Texas miracle" rests on conservative pillars that he would bring to the White House: minimal regulation and government, low taxes and a determination to limit the reach of Uncle Sam.

What he does not say is that much of that job growth has come because of government, not in spite of it.

With a young and fast-growing population, a large and expanding military presence and an influx of federal stimulus money, the number of government jobs in Texas has grown at more than double the rate of private-sector employment during Perry's tenure. [The Washington Post, 8/20/11]

CNNMoney: Texas' 2010-11 Budget Filled "Nearly 97%" Of $6.6 Billion Deficit With Federal Stimulus Funds. From CNNMoney:

Turns out Texas was the state that depended the most on those very stimulus funds to plug nearly 97% of its shortfall for fiscal 2010, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Texas, which crafts a budget every two years, was facing a $6.6 billion shortfall for its 2010-2011 fiscal years. It plugged nearly all of that deficit with $6.4 billion in Recovery Act money, allowing it to leave its $9.1 billion rainy day fund untouched.

"Stimulus was very helpful in getting them through the last few years," said Brian Sigritz, director of state fiscal studies for the National Association of State Budget Officers, said of Texas. [CNN.com, 1/24/11]

CNNMoney: With Stimulus Funds Drying Up, Texas Faces $31 Billion In Cuts In Next Budget Cycle, Hitting Schools, Colleges, Medicaid, And Social Services For The Needy. From CNNMoney:

Unfortunately for Texas, and for most other states in the union, the stimulus safety net has dried up. So they are now facing draconian spending cuts as they try to close yawning budget gaps for fiscal 2012, which starts July 1 in most states.

Texas is in trouble too. State lawmakers last week unveiled an austere budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal years that cuts $31 billion in spending. Schools, colleges, Medicaid and social services for the needy will be hit especially hard. [CNN.com, 1/24/11]

Wash. Post: Population Growth Has Necessitated Public-Sector Growth In Texas, Including "More Teachers, Budget Analysts, Compliance Officers, And Police Officers." From The Washington Post:

Analysts call the growth in government employment in Texas a natural consequence of the surging population, which has grown by more than 20 percent in the past decade to 25.1 million. The increase has caused local governments and school systems to hire more teachers, budget analysts, compliance officers and police officers.

"A lot of growth has been happening in the public sector to respond to a growing population," said Don Baylor Jr., a senior policy analyst with the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a research and advocacy group in Austin. "That has been an ongoing driver of our job growth." [The Washington Post, 8/20/11]

Wash. Post: Texas Received "More Than $227 Billion In Federal Spending In 2009" And "The Third-Highest Amount Of Stimulus Money In the Nation." From The Washington Post:

The Texas economy also has benefited from the huge sums spent by the federal government. The state is home to several large military installations as well as NASA, which helped Texas reap more than $227 billion in federal spending in 2009 -- more than double its 2001 total, according to the Census Bureau. Texas is the nation's second-most-populous state, behind California, where the federal government spent almost $346 billion in 2009.

In the wake of the Great Recession, the state has raked in nearly $25 billion in federal stimulus money, which has gone to everything from road projects and unemployment benefits to helping to balance the state budget. Befitting its population, Texas has received the third-highest amount of stimulus money in the nation, behind California and New York. [The Washington Post, 8/20/11]

Strict Home-Loan Regulation Helped Shield Texas From Housing Boom And Bust

Wash. Post: "Tight Regulation Of Home Equity Loans" And "Tightly Regulated" Mortgage Lenders Helped Shield Texas From Housing Bubble. From The Washington Post:

Texas was shielded from the worst of the housing-market bust by the state government's tight regulation of home equity loans, which were not permitted until the late 1990s and are limited to 80 percent of a homeowner's equity. Elsewhere, property owners often took out riskier home equity loans and mortgages that left them financially crippled when housing prices collapsed, causing damaging ripples across the economy.

At the same time, mortgage lenders in Texas are tightly regulated, which prevented abuses that were prevalent in many parts of the country. Taken together, the regulations helped keep Texas housing prices in check. [The Washington Post, 8/20/11]

Wash. Post: Housing Problems In Texas "Are Orders Of Magnitude Less Than They Would Have Been Without The Home-Equity Limits." From The Washington Post:

But there is a broader secret to Texas's success, and Washington reformers ought to be paying very close attention. If there's one thing that Congress can do to help protect borrowers from the worst lending excesses that fueled the mortgage and financial crises, it's to follow the Lone Star State's lead and put the brakes on "cash-out" refinancing and home-equity lending.

A cash-out refinance is a mortgage taken out for a higher balance than the one on an existing loan, net of fees. Across the nation, cash-outs became ubiquitous during the mortgage boom, as skyrocketing house prices made it possible for homeowners, even those with bad credit, to use their home equity like an ATM. But not in Texas. There, cash-outs and home-equity loans cannot total more than 80 percent of a home's appraised value. There's a 12-day cooling-off period after an application, during which the borrower can pull out. And when a borrower refinances a mortgage, it's illegal to get even a dollar back. Texas really means it: All these protections, and more, are in the state constitution. The Texas restrictions on mortgage borrowing date from the first days of statehood in 1845, when the constitution banned home loans.

Until 1998, Texans couldn't take out home-equity loans at all. The roots of this fierce resistance to debt's temptations go deep in Texas history. Seven years before the republic joined the Union in 1845, many homesteaders lost their property because of a bank panic and the resulting foreclosures. Drawing from Mexican codes protecting landholders, the new constitution of the state of Texas forbade lenders from peddling mortgages to homesteaders.

The home-equity restrictions have not only helped keep cash-out refinances a rare breed in Texas; other risky mortgages were scarce there, too. The home-equity borrowing restrictions helped keep home prices from overinflating, and home buyers therefore didn't need to turn to exotic mortgages with such features as 2/28 ARMs, interest-only payments, or negative amortization in order to buy a home. Even when they did, Texas law requires these risky features to be clearly disclosed. Fewer than 20 percent of Texas subprime mortgages included any of them.

That's not to say that Texas borrowers didn't get into bubble trouble. Plenty bought overpriced houses, which is why one in eight Texans now owe more than their home is worth. And it was easy enough for lenders to get around the home-equity borrowing limits by using creative appraisals that pretend a home is worth more than it really is. But the casualties are orders of magnitude less than they would have been without the home-equity limits. [The Washington Post, 4/4/10]
