{Political_Views} Federal offense

Friend,

Imagine an America in which the government can prevent protest in any public space it deems fit. Where wearing a dissenting shirt around an elected official could be construed as a felony. Where First-Amendment protections become privileges subjectively doled out by the state. Sadly, that America is pretty much here.

In March, Congress passed HR 347, a bill that limits Americans' ability to protest in public and on government grounds. Mainstream media didn't raise peep, but now there's finally some anger building. The bill, passed almost unanimously, makes it a federal offense punishable by up to ten years in prison to "knowingly" protest in the vicinity of the Secret Service -- that is anywhere the Secret Service "is or will be temporarily visiting."

Click here to demand that Congress reinstate -- and safeguard -- Americans' right to engage in protest.  This campaign is being run by WatchDog.net, a side-project of Demand Progress.

It also makes many public events impervious to lawful protest. Any "National Security Special Event" (NSSE) requires Secret Service protection. NSSE-designated events have proliferated since 9/11 to include Super Bowls, concerts, campaign events, and now any public event that Very Important People want protest-free.

Most dangerously, it criminalizes protest
. Under the bill, "disorderly or disruptive conduct" or activities that "impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business or official functions" could warrant felony charges. What constitutes such "disruptive conduct" rests in the eye of the beholder--or the eye of Eric Holder. To put it plainly: the government can decide where and when free speech is allowed and severely prosecute any "disruptive" activity, while we're confined to "free speech zones." We can help fix it, however!

Will you click here to sign WatchDog.net's petition to protect our speech rights?

Let's keep on fighting.

{Political_Views} NEW POLL:

BREAKING: A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Democrats with a 49% to 43% lead in the battle for Congress.

James, I don't have to tell you, a 6 point lead is a BIG deal. And if we can keep this momentum going, we could be on track to replace Boehner and Cantor's Tea Party majority with a Democratic House for President Obama.

But first, we have to close the spending gap.

This week, the Republicans launched a multi-million dollar ad campaign against our candidates in 22 of the tightest races across the country. We've come too far to let these dishonest ads cost us the election.

Donate $3 or more to help us immediately fight back against these Republican attacks and elect a Democratic majority for President Obama >>

Right now, Democratic candidates are being outspent in too many too-close-to-call races. When the polls close on November 6th, I don't want to have that sinking feeling that we didn't do everything we could to close the spending gap when it mattered.

Please chip in what you can to help us fight back:

{Political_Views} BREAKING: Seven Senate seats up for grabs

527 Victory Fund Update 405px

Donate to LCV Victory Fund: Seven battleground Senate races are virtually tied! Give today before the September 30th FEC deadline and have a major impact on these races in the final weeks before Election Day.

James --

Donate before the September 30th FEC deadline!

Seven critical environmental Senate races are up for grabs – Connecticut, Montana, Virginia, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, and Massachusetts.

Chip in with a donation of $5 today to help LCV Victory Fund win >>

The Massachusetts Senate race between Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown is now a dead heat. In Connecticut, World Wrestling Entertainment owner and climate denier Linda McMahon has closed the gap with Rep. Chris Murphy.

With the Montana, Virginia, Nevada, Arizona, and Ohio Senate races also incredibly close, our goal of maintaining a firewall of at least 41 Senators willing to filibuster against the worst anti-environment attacks could be in jeopardy.

Every single one of these races is winnable - but here's the bottom line: undecided voters are deciding now. And with early voting in Montana and Ohio just a few weeks away, every day we wait is a missed opportunity.

The LCV Victory Fund urgently needs to raise $120,000 for canvassing and get-out-the-vote efforts by the FEC deadline of September 30th. We need to be in a strong position for the final October push. I promise you, if you give today, your gift will have an impact on these races.

Don't miss a moment - make a gift to LCV Victory Fund today >>

This past Tuesday, the New York Times declared,

"With less than two months until Election Day, the Senate landscape is both broader and more fluid than it has been in years, with control of the upper chamber now anyone's guess."

LCV Victory Fund is focusing on the tight races where we have the best chance of making a real impact. In the last weeks of the election, here are the Senate races where we're concentrating our efforts:

Massachusetts: A recent poll shows Scott Brown up by just one point against Elizabeth Warren. To help her win on Election Day, we're conducting one of the largest canvass operations in LCV's history to identify and persuade pro-environment voters to turn out. It's working - Warren is picking up momentum and with your help, we can help her take the lead.
Virginia: Virginia is one of the top targets for Karl Rove's and the Koch brothers' Super PACs – and they're blanketing the state with nasty and misleading advertising. In response, we're running one of our largest mail operations to help put former Virginia governor Tim Kaine ahead of former Virginia Senator – and 3-time Dirty Dozen member – George Allen.
Montana: Clean energy champion Jon Tester won his 2006 race by just 3,562 votes and we're expecting this race to be just as close. We've been running a program to identify and target pro-environment voters who want to vote by mail. With only 500,000 individuals expected to vote in November, if we can just get a portion of them to commit to vote by mail, we may have the margin of victory needed to win.

We're also working around the clock in Connecticut, Nevada, Arizona, and Ohio, where pro-environment candidates are running neck-and-neck against candidates strongly backed by corporate special interests.

Many pro-environment candidates are getting pummeled by negative attack ads from groups funded by Karl Rove and the Koch brothers. But despite the millions of dollars pouring into these battleground states, corporate special interest groups haven't been able to significantly move the needle. The public is still with us and that's why we need your support today.

Believe me, I've seen it before, just a few votes could decide these races. Will you chip in $5 to help LCV Victory Fund win for the environment?

Thank you for your generosity. Our nation – and the planet – is counting on it.

Best –

{Political_Views} Poll Update: New Numbers in WI and MA

--

Just wanted to share some very interesting new poll numbers that I saw this morning. The latest Senate poll out of Massachusetts shows Elizabeth Warren up four points over Scott Brown. And in Wisconsin, Rep. Tammy Baldwin is leading former Governor Tommy Thompson 50 percent to 45 percent, according to a new survey. These are just two new polls, but the numbers look very encouraging. Keeping up the pressure is working! More than 700 supporters gave $40,000 to kick off our online campaign on Monday. Help us reach $120,000 by the September 30th FEC deadline. Help us start October off strong so we all win in November!

Will you chip $5 in to help LCV Victory Fund today?

Sept. 19, 2012 - Barack Obama holds an eight-point lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters, a bigger September margin than the last three candidates who went on to win in November, including Obama four years ago. About four-in-ten Americans (43%) followed news about the attacks on U.S. embassies in the Middle East and the killing of an American ambassador very closelyThose who followed this story have much more positive opinions about Barack Obama's handling of the situation than Mitt Romney's comments on the crisis.  Read the report.

{Political_Views} [narconews] Conroy: Mexican Special Forces Employed as Drug War Death Squads

September 20, 2012
Please Distribute Widely

Dear Colleague,

Narco News correspondent Bill Conroy reports that Ciudad Juarez earned the reputation as the most dangerous city in the world as its murder rate ramped up exponentially between 2008 and 2011, with some 10,000 murders attributed to a "cartel" turf war being wage in the Mexican border community of some 1.2 million just south of El Paso, Texas.

Conroy reports:

"However, a trail of email correspondence involving a Mexican diplomat, dubbed MX1, obtained by the secret-spilling organization WikiLeaks seems to show that not all of the bloodshed in Juarez is attributable solely to sparring drug organizations — the narrative pushed by the US mainstream media.

"… MX1, in one of the emails released by WikiLeaks, describes the Mexican military's mission in Juarez as involving a special-operations and intelligence-unit component that was embedded within the larger Mexican military force. These special units were charged with carrying out `surgical strikes' against narco-trafficking `cells' and `third war' [gang and drug-addict] criminals.

"Stripped of the military jargon, these special strike forces sound very much like death squads."
